‘The idea for the project originated from the Prestongrange ‘Handmade’ project in July and August last year.
The craft residency project has been jointly funded by East Lothian Council and the Scottish Arts Council to give pupils a hands-on chance to learn about local history and craft – making techniques.’

‘The elaborate textile sculpture started out as simple pieces of wool. The children made the wool into felt, which was then used to create pictures depicting the heritage of Prestonpans as seen through the eyes of the youngsters. The wallhanging incorpates images showing the area’s mining history, its countryside and trees and its location beside the sea.’

‘the artwork, which now takes pride of place in the school foyer, has been created by pupils as part of a 12-week project involving textile artist Jeanette Sendler. Funded by East Lothian Council and the Scottish Arts Council, the wallhanging was designed to represent the heritage of Prestonpans, with images of its former mining industry, landscape and seaside location. The photographs shows P5 pupils with East Lothian Provost Pat O’Brien, who performed the unveiling: Helen Bennett, from the Scottish Arts Council; Joanna Mawdsley, cultural coordinator for East Lothian Council; Headteacher Florence Brydon and artist Jeanette Sendler’
