Coat-hanger people...

Drummond Community High School, Edinburgh
Photography by David Ford

As part of the “Threads” residency at Drummond Community High School, artist-in-residence Jeanette Sendler has worked with a group of pupils exploring the theme of memories. Pupils have each created a “coathanger” of letters, poems, embroidery, photographs and memorabilia as a tribute to a special person in their lives.

Foreword: by The Scottish Storytelling Centre

Young people are natural storytellers. The "StoryMakers" project was inspired by a wish to open the door to young people's creativity, giving them opportunities to listen to stories and to play with them through different media. Aside from being entertaining, stories act as wonderful springboards for the imagination and stimulate ideas, activities and understanding. Storyteller Jess Smith, who was involved in the project, was born into a Traveller family in Aberfeldy. When she was five years old, her parents purchased a 1948 single decker bus and set off on the open road, where Jess began gathering stories of her life.

She has passed these on to the pupils of Drummond Community High School. This idea of sharing stories and memories has been the inspiration for “Coathanger People”

  Stories from class '1A2'.....2005
I remember when it was Christmas and my granny came round for tea. I stayed up all night till three O’clock because my gran kept telling me lots of interesting stories. I liked her stories so much that I didn’t want to go to bed. Although some of her stories were so scary that I never wanted to go to bed. Anyway, I finally went to bed because I was really sleepy. I still have a locket and a ring she gave me and I still remember the teddy bear she bought me that I begged for, I called it Togo. It’s still in my room. I always remember my grandma by that bear!

One day, 19th of February 2004, my niece was born. I remember I was watching the television, I can’t remember what I was watching. My brother got a call, the person said she had a little girl called Skye.

I remember the very next day I went to the hospital. I got to hold her. She was so pretty; she was wearing a pink vest with teddy bears on it. She fell asleep on me and when my mum took her of me I had a dead arm, then I went home.

My memory of my grandpa was when I was really young and I used to go to McDonalds with my Grandpa and count how many 26 buses there were in the street.

My dad always cares about me. When I fall he picks me up. When I cut myself he puts a plaster on it. When I make a mess he cleans it up. When I lose my temper he calms me down.
He helps me with work when he can.

When my brother was 2 years old he was very sick and my dad and mum told the local doctor who told them to take him to the hospital. The doctor admitted my brother in the hospital and started the treatment.

The first two days my dad and mum were very worried and they didn’t sleep. Then after two days my brother was feeling better. Me and my younger brother were at home with our grandad and granny.
Then 1 day later the doctor said that Osaf is alright now, you can take him home and then my dad and mum brought my brother home and we were really pleased.

I remember when I was 5, I had the chickenpox. My granny Margaret took care of me. She made me chocolate rice crispy cakes. When I was 7 in the summer holidays, me, my gran and my granda went to the Botanics.

It was a warm summer’s day, the sky was bright blue. I felt happy to be with them. We saw loads of squirrels. We went in the greenhouse and we saw fish in the pond. Granny Margaret smelled of roses, she always made her hair curly. She always wore a skirt.

My memory is when me and my grandpa were in the house. We were watching t.v. The house started to shake. It was and earthquake. I fell and hit my back off the table, my grandpa took me outside and my mum and granma were at the neighbour’s house but they were alright. One of my friends was quite badly hurt, he was running down the stairs and he fell all the way down. He broke his arm and his leg.

One day me and Tammy went ice skating at Princes Street. Tammy got a size 5 skates, then she got a size 6 which were too big then she got a size 5. She sat on the chair and put one skate on and then went over to the step and put the second skate on. When she stood up her bum was all wet and it has a big stain on it. I was laughing my head off. We stayed for about 30 minutes. Then guess what? I went and fell.

This is about my special person Jade my sister. I remember the time in Spain, my dad was in a foul mood and decided we all had to go on a 20 mile hike. As we were walking me and Jade started mucking about because it was boring and he kept getting moodier as we went. Then out of the blue he shouted at us and everyone stared. So me and Jade stopped and my dad felt better.

We were almost finished when Jade touched me and said “last touch” and I chased her. My dad shouted and said when we get back your not allowed in the pool. Well I went and so did Jade, dad noticed and came down. “Get out now” he said and Jade said “get back to your bed because that’s shan on Alex”. He left and my sister made me and my dad O.K. with each other.

In the year 2003 I was in p7 and this nice brown haired girl walked in and sat down and I was saying in my head I wished she had sat down beside me. Next day I showed her around the school , then we became friends and now at high school in first year we’re never apart.

In 1996, March 30th, my cousin Aquib was born. I met him the first time he came to Edinburgh. I was only 5 years old. He had curly hair and a chubby face. He was a funny baby. Over the years he has grown up and so have I. When he comes to my house we normally muck about then go to my dad’s shop on the bus to play my playstation 2.

Now he is my favourite cousin and we do loads of things together when he comes.

I remember when I went on holiday to Pitlochry with my grandparents. It was the best holiday ever! The first day of our holiday was great – we went exploring down past waterfalls. We decided to sit under it. We imagined there were fairies who lived there but I don’t believe in that sort of thing anymore. We had a magical night until we fell out because I wouldn’t eat my dinner.

I told them I hated them and ran away crying. I remember I felt so low and upset. Then I came through and apologised.
