RESIDENCIES Johnsmas Foy, Lerwick Pier June 2005
Felt a sail in a day!   This was the challenge Jeanette threw open to people at the Lerwick Foy. The local bands on the stage helped to make the sail into a wee dance floor.

Jeanette Sendler ended her successful textile residency in Shetland with an exhibition of colourful & impressive feltmaking made by the bairns in Brae, Mossbank & Olnafirth primary schools, from nursery to class seven.

'stomping the oo' (wool in Shetlandish)
water & pressure are key factors in feltmaking

Helped by their knitting instructor Margaret Manson, it was clear that Jeanette & the pupils had enjoyed making the work for their final exhibition 'Thelma - a textile journey'.

The boat was the centrepiece, filled with contemporary, colourful & glittering felted treasures made in Shetland wool. There were felted stones, colourful creatures, feltwhiskered figureheads & felted nets - new kind of intriguing cargo, enjoyed & appreciated by the crowds on the pier as the comments book recorded.

"Really interesting work, it's good to see craftwork promoted in schools" was just one example. Thelma, the boat was surrounded by felted flags, expressive woollen portraits & a creel full of colourful stones.

Felt braclets, here adorning the oars, will be
reunited with their creators at the 3 schools

The contemporary textile residency was celebrated at the foy by Jeanette & artists Barbara & Wilma Cluness making an expressive felted sail - in a day. The exotic sail was around six foot by four foot.

Jeanette would like to extend special thanks to Shetland artists Barbara & Wilma Cluness who made a crack team.

Here they they lay out the first 'oo'...

Right: A viking adds a stitch or two to a scalf at the Foy. No doubt they knitted on their longships...?
