The Royal Burgh of Newburgh lies nestled beneath Ormiston Hill on the south bank of the Tay estuary ~10 miles east of Perth in the Kingdom of Fife. Newburgh is perfectly placed to benefit from the reed beds on the Tay, the largest in Britain & 15% of the total. They are a migration hotspot for many species including Marsh Harriers Swallows & Sand Martins. Home to 10,000 species of insect, the reed banks attract around 25,000 birds in autumn.
Mugdrum Island (seen left) used to have a farm which grew potatoes, cereals & turnips. Even cattle used to be ferried across. Now it’s an important breeding ground for Red Shanks & Marsh Harriers among others.
Geese cover fields adjacent the Tay in their thousands in spring & autumn & fill the air with their spectacular flight patterns & earnest cries.
