‘The Newburgh Trunk’

Our first showcase took place 5-9 July 2007 with the work created by children from Newburgh Primary School. During the opening our local historian Janet Bayne presented the children with a narrative giving away snippets of how the legend/story of the trunk will continue.

Showcase No 2 (of a total of 3) will take place the weekend 22nd and 23rd September 2007 at Fife Arts Co-operative, High Street 65a. Put it in your diary!

The entire school came and there was a large cue outside the exhibition and Janet had to tell her story three times over!

| During the next 5 days 89 people visited the exhibition to look at Newburgh’s people’s faces in felt as envisaged by their children or to admire the jam making recipes the children had written in ancient lettering. |

The Orchard group presented photographs of previous fruit sales and provided a leaflet with all the information needed to get involved in future fairs.
The next plum fair will be Saturday 25th August and Saturday 1st September at St Katharine’s Court on the High Street, Apples and Pears over several Saturday mornings from August to October.) |

| The Library had lent their 2003 survey of the Newburgh Fruit Trees for the public to view. |

The calligraphy corner which was placed in the exhibition
proved
to be very popular by the younger generation. Many love letters were drafted (some of them delivered), sealed with red wax just as the old monks would have done 800 years ago. (Please note there are some unclaimed letters still waiting to be collected!)

Tthe next visit to the primary school in autumn is already planned.

A MYSTERIOUS trunk and a recipe book have inspired an art exhibition in Newburgh this weekend.
It is the first ‘spotlight’ exhibition featuring the work of Fife Arts Co-operative Artist in Residence Jeanette Sendler with the Newburgh community.
Newburgh primary School students and teachers have been creating work around the story of a trunk containing a recipe book discovered in the Steeple and said to belong to the monks who lived centuries ago at Lindores Abbey……….. |

For the fall three workshops on a fruit harvest theme are planned under the name ‘Action Windfall’ led by Fife Arts Co-operative and artist in residence Jeanette Sendler.
During the first showcase some people have already signed up for the upcoming events. |

The above workshops will lead up to showcase No 2 which will take place the weekend 22nd and 23rd September at Fife Arts Co-operative, 65a High Street.
Fife Arts Co-operative appointed Jeanette Sender in March 2007 as their artist in residence through the Scottish Arts Council’s Partners scheme. Jeanette will be the first occupant of a visiting artist’s studio and flat in the WASPS Steeple studio complex which is due to open in Newburgh and will be the base for Fife Arts Co-operative’s activities.
Other events scheduled are 3 Master classes in co-operation with residency partner Twist Fibre |

| Plum Job is a year long residency for an artist working with textiles / fibre to explore the past and present relationship of the community to the land in Newburgh. |
