- Introduction to single bed stitch structures
- Introduction to different types of yarns, needles, various functions, material equipment
- Developing samples. Compiling a portfolio, including hole stitching, weave, tuck, lace structures, hand finishing skills
- Introduction to hand knit Fair Isle
- Introduction to Shetland machine lace knitting
- Introduction to V-bed knitting (double bed), rip structures, rucking structures, slip and transfer structures
- Hand finishing skills
- Use of chunky knitting machines
- Support is given by the teacher to provide guidance to materialize a personal project

Barbara Ridland has knitted since childhood & studied at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen in 1980 specialising in drawing & painting. She became a lecturer for textiles at Shetland College in 1987.
Now freelance, she designs for the international market including Japan, France, America and Italy & exhibits regularly in joint exhibitions on Shetland. She is currently working in collaboration with Jeanette Sendler which will result in an exhibition called ‘Seven Minutes of Explosion’, in the summer of 2008.
